Taft, CA – February 5, 2025 – The West Kern Oil Museum, in collaboration with Chevron, is excited to announce a groundbreaking project that will revolutionize the way visitors experience the rich history of Kern County's oil industry. This ambitious initiative, in partnership with the Taft High Heritage Club and Taft Oil Technology, aims to digitize the museum's extensive collection and create an immersive augmented reality (AR) experience that extends into downtown Taft. The museum's diverse collection of artifacts, documents, and photographs will be meticulously digitized, ensuring their preservation and accessibility for future generations. Visitors will enjoy an interactive AR experience that brings historical artifacts to life, offers virtual reconstructions of historical scenes, and provides guided tours throughout downtown Taft. Local students from Taft Union High School will play a crucial role in the project, gaining hands-on experience in historical preservation and AR content creation. The project encourages community participation, inviting residents to contribute their own historical items and stories, fostering a deeper connection to Taft's heritage.

Don Maxwell, Board Chair of the West Kern Oil Museum, stated, "This project represents a significant step forward in preserving and sharing the rich history of Taft's oil industry. By leveraging modern technology, we can create an engaging and educational experience that will attract visitors of all ages." Chevron's representative, Megan Lopez, added, "We are happy to be able to support the West Kern Oil Museum on this innovative project which enables users of this technology to better understand, appreciate and explore the legacy of Kern County's oil industry. This project is an example of our ongoing investments to improve the quality of life in the communities where we do business."
